Aloe cooperi
There is a group of Aloe species known as the “grass aloes”, native mostly to eastern South Africa. They typically grow in grasslands, and they tend to look like clumps of grass - until their flowers give them away. Few of them are seen in cultivation in California, because they are adapted to high rainfall in summer and completely dry conditions in winter- the opposite of our precipitation pattern. Aloe cooperi, however, is more resilient than other grass aloes - and also larger. It is listed as growing up to 4 feet tall (1.2 m), but at the Ruth Bancroft Garden it has grown even larger than this, topping out at a little over 5 feet (1.52 m). The coral, yellow and green flowers are reminiscent of candy corn.
