Info

Elysia zuleicae Ortea & Espinosa, 2002

Seaslugs of genus Elysia feed primilary by piercing and sucking algae cells (chloroplasts). They are sap Sucking Slugs.Thats why Elysia is,like their food, often green.Young species are brownish or beige in colour.

Holotype described as Elysia leeanneae was reported to have been collected from Guadelupe. This name was synonymized and re-described as Elysia zuleicae in 2002. Elysia zuleicae grows to a maximum size of 1.7cm and is widespread in the western Atlantic and Caribbean. The sapsucker snail feeds on algae from the genera Udotea, Bryopsis, Polyphysa and the green algae Halimeda incrassata. Although it absorbs kleptoplasts, these are not functional, i.e. the snail cannot photosynthesize.
