Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum Floor Map

 

Museum

  • Permanent Exhibits (General and Sub-exhibitions )

    Under the theme of “Sea and Island Life-Seeking Prosperity, Beauty and Peace,” the permanent exhibits provide a general overview of Okinawa’s nature, history, and culture, following the course of Okinawa’s 20,000-year history, beginning with the appearance of humans such as the Minatogawa Man up until the present day. 
    Visitors can further deepen their knowledge in the sub-exhibits, which are separated into five the specific sections of natural history, archeology, arts and crafts, history, and ethnicity.

  • Special and Planned Exhibitions

    The museum also holds exhibits surrounding specific themes related to natural and other histories, along with the cultures of Japan and other countries and regions. 

  • Touch and Experience Room

    In the Touch and Experience Room, visitors can learn, while participating, about Okinawa’s history, culture, and nature. This room has many experience kits that children and adults alike can enjoy by looking, listening, touching, and using all of their five senses. 

  • Workshop Room

    Many hands-on workshops and events are held here, including classes on how to make plaster Okinawan lion statues (shiisa) and folk crafts.

  • Outdoor Display

    Outside, the museum has red-tiled houses, the Wakuta-kama kiln that was excavated when constructing the prefectural government building and raised-floor warehouses for storing grains. They are open for viewing. There is also a section containing plants commonly used in Okinawa for weaving and dyeing.

  • Lecture Room

    In the lecture room, the museum holds classes that prepare visitors for viewing exhibitions, classes led by curators, and various lectures.

Art Museum

  • Collection Galleries

    Exhibitions in the collection galleries center on the museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art by artists who are from or have connections to Okinawa.

  • Exhibition Galleries

    Exhibitions organized by curators based on their research studies, as well as exceptional work by Japanese and foreign artists.

  • Entrance Hall

    A refreshingly cool space at the center of the museum with an open ceiling through which sunbeams filter in, along with pillars designed in the image of fountain palm trees.

  • Media Library

    Visitors can browse through and view Okinawa-related books and videos and search the database of the museums’ collection s.

  • Auditorium

    Lectures, symposiums, and film screenings are held in the auditorium. (Capacity: 210 seats)

  • Museum Shop

    The museum shop offers goods and books related to the museums. Stop by to find memorabilia of your visit.

  • Museum Cafe

    Come in and enjoy pasta dishes made with local vegetables, original desserts, and beverages.
