FQRVroED Most meetings of s c i e n t i s t s and engineers today, p e r i o d i c a l l y repeated l i k e time s igna l s on radar screens , pass into obl iv ion with l i g h t - ning speed and unlamented. Our Twenty - f i r s t Annual'Meeting at Lenox, Massachusetts, was d i f f e r e n t , i n spi te of the large number (315^ of par- t i c i p a n t s , because our loose confederation of s c i e n t i s t s , engineers, man- ufac turers , jand in teres ted by-standers enjoys i t s annual Conference as an adventure i n mutual understanding and free d i s c u s s i o n . We are learning each others language; are beginning to'appreciate each others problems,- and while ambling tlirough the f i e l d of d i e l e c t r i c s from the fundamental behavior of gases, l i q u i d s , and s o l i d s to the misdemeanors of f i n i s h e d products, we are gaining a new perspective of our own pro fe s s ion . Our program i n the past was frequently compartmentalized, thus appealing i n successive sect ions to the various groups of our membership. T h i s time the fare was purposely scrambled, and problems were followed through i n the same sess ion from research to a p p l i c a t i o n . T h i s po l i cy proved succes s fu l and should be reta ined: the "Q" of lobby and bar were a maximum during ,the s e s s ions , - - they were enpty. The theme "Destruction and Deter iorat ion of D i e l e c t r i c s , " neglected f o r some years at our meetings, f i l l e d two days t h i s time. The morning sess ion on Saturday dealt with " F e r r o e l e c t r i c s and Ferromagnetics." These nonlinear d i e l e c t r i c s , the great newcomers i n our f i e l d of I n t e r e s t , v i l l become of continuously Increas ing Importance. The Bound Table Discuss ions are now an i n t e g r a l part of the - Conference and operate unprepared with a remarkable spontaneity i n questions and answers, i n free c r i t i c i s m and Inoffens ive r e b u t t a l . Since many of the comments are made "off the record ," we have l e f t i t to the group leaders whether or not they want to report on these meetings i n the annual r e p o r t . I n keeping with the unconventional s p i r i t of our Conference, we experimented with the evening entertainment. On Thursday, i n addit ion to the beloved old W. C . F i e l d s , a movie of a r t i s t i c d i s t i n c t i o n was of fered: "The Emperor's Nightingale ," not yet p u b l i c l y r e l e a s e d . On F r i d a y , i n place of a glamorous a f t er -d inner speaker, we entertained ourselves by a Bound-Table Discuss ion "Beports on Europe ,"—six of our number, recent ly returned from t r i p s to the Continent, reported about t h e i r impressions, ably supported by Mr. De l Mar as the master of ceremonies. Both e f f o r t s succeeded, as many ccmmente proved. I t i s c l e a r that our group appreciates entertainment, beyond Jokes and laughs, addressed to our minds and hearts and that our own d i v e r s i f i e d membership can provide i t . A s p e c i a l vote of thanks was given to D r . A . J . Warner, our Secretary f o r t h i s year; to Mr. H , S . E n d i c o t t , our Chairman of Loca l Arrangements; and to Mr. Louis Jordan and Mrs. H. P , Lewis , the Executive Secretary and S e c r e t a r i a l Ass i s tant of the D i v i s i o n of Engineering and I n d u s t r i a l Eesearch , National Eesearch Counc i l , f or t h e i r unt i r ing e f f o r t s to keep the Conference functioning smoothly, Mr. F r a n c i s E , Fairman, J r . , brought the greetings of our host , the General E l e c t r i c Company, and x l l

Professor Milton K . Akers , those of our parent organizat ion, the National Research Counc i l . Again, a great effoi-t i s being made t h i s year by our Committee on the Digest of L i t e r a t u r e to compile a sensible review of the d i e l e c t r i c a f i e l d . We are deeply indebted to D r . H , Thumauer and h i s assoc ia tes for fol lowing t h r o u ^ t h i s fonaidable ta sk i n quiet desperation. Our f i n a n c i a l s i t u a t i o n approaches bankruptcy, but only asymptot- i c a l l y . T h i s and other interesting-problems we leave to our Incoming Execut ive Conmlttee, D r . D, W. K i t ch in , Chairman; D r , D. A. McLean, Vice Chairman; D r . A . H. Sharbaugli, Secre tary , with our best wishes f o r a s u c c e s s f u l 1955. / s / A . von Hippel Laboratory f o r I n s u l a t i o n Research Massachusetts I n s t i t u t e of Technology Cambridge, Mass. x i i i
