Manuscript Monday Update!
This full-page illumination derives from a scene in the Life of Saint Margaret, when she emerges triumphant after Satan, in the form of a dragon, has swallowed her. The illumination, damaged by overpainting, is a leaf from a Book of Hours that was probably illuminated by Herman Scheerre or an associate between the years 1415-20. Features such as the tightly curled acanthus leaves around the border, and the red cloud around God the Father in the upper right-hand corner are features that particularly resemble his style.

I particularly like how the dragon still munches on her pink clothing.

“Saint? What Saint?”
In the upcoming months, we hope to reveal Margaret, now mostly hidden, with the aid of multi-spectral photography. Stay tuned to learn what we discover!
