Biography[edit]

He quickly climbed up the ranks of motorsport, finishing third in the Japanese Formula 4 championship in 2017 before winning the next season in 2018. He graduated to Formula 3 in 2019 and Formula 2 in 2020, finishing third in the Formula 2 Championship with Carlin with three wins, four poles, and seven podiums.
In 2021, Tsunoda was announced as a race driver for Scuderia AlphaTauri, becoming the first Japanese driver to race in Formula 1 since Kamui Kobayashi in 2014. Tsunoda made his debut at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, scoring points with a ninth place finish. He continued to impress throughout the season with his speed and overtaking ability, scoring points in six races and earning a best finish of sixth place in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Despite hailed as one of the most promising young talents in F1, Tsunoda's second season in Formula 1 was rough.
