Vehicle History

Toyota Mark II JZX90

In the early 1990’s, Toyota was at the top of their game, pumping out performance cars left and right. Their flagship sport coupe, the record shattering Toyota Supra, set the benchmark for what Japanese auto manufacturers were able to produce. When Toyota saw the success of the Supra in the Japanese market, they decided to capitalize on the situation, beefing up their lineup of commuter cars with the powerhouse twin turbocharged 1JZ-GTE engine. This sleeper sedan you see before you is one of those cars. Known as the JZX90, this extremely versatile sedan was internationally known in the 1990’s as the do-it-all high-performance commuter. Offered in a broad variety of trims in Japan, the X90 could be spotted everywhere from city streets and highways to mountain touges and road courses. This particular 1994 model year example, known as the Toyota Mark II Tourer V, was the most barebones 1JZGTE equipped vehicle you could buy at the time, especially in slicktop form. The exterior is finished in a beautiful coat of Toyota Dark Green (6N2) paint. The provided auction record shows some light repair and repaint work to the exterior, so not all paint is original, but the quality of the paint job is definitely there and this Mark II is quite the looker. There are some expected age-related defects such as slight discoloration and clear coat fade, but absolutely no major dents, dings, or other eyesores to be found. Toyota enthusiasts will appreciate the subtle OEM upgrade to the exterior, a genuine 2-piece lip kit! The OEM 6 spoke alloys wear their original silver finish quite well and are wrapped in good Yokohama Neova summer tires. Tein coilover suspension has been installed and give this tourer just enough drop to eliminate any unnecessary wheel gap. The interior is just as clean and has remained completely unmodified, as expected. For a 28 year old vehicle, all materials are in excellent shape. The matching green upholstery on the original seats is free of any rips, tears, or burns, with only some light bolster wear and expected sun fading present. All dash materials are in great shape, with the original deep blue vinyl remaining fully intact, with no damage or cracks. All dash buttons, switches, and features work as expected, down to the automatic climate control. A classic Panasonic DVD player is surprisingly fully functional and replaces the OEM headunit. This is a great car for the family as the DVD plays back on a screen attached to the passenger side headrest, keeping the little ones occupied during long road trips. The back seats are incredibly roomy, and this Mark II will have no issues daily driving or comfortably seating a full squad of JDM enthusiasts. The OEM gauge cluster is fully functional and displays 278,181 km (172,853 verified miles). While this Mark II has certainly seen some use we’re quite impressed at how well it has been maintained and kept clean by the previous owner. Pop the hood and you’ll be happy to see the engine bay remains just as clean as the rest of the vehicle. The twin turbocharged 1JZ-GTE fires right up and idles smoothly, not surprising given that this was one of Toyota’s most reliable powerplants. With a full history of multiple services and timing belt replacements, we’re certain this example was properly maintained up until the day it left Japanese shores. Driving this Mark II is a rewarding experience. Both turbos spool quickly and produce a symphony of forced induction goodness as you soar through the rev range. The powerband is smooth and perfect for around town cruising. The automatic transmission hardly feels sluggish, in fact it feels right at home in this luxury sport sedan, with smooth shifts and near-quiet operation making this Mark II a perfect vehicle for highway cruises and road trips. For enthusiasts looking for an untouched example of this legendary JDM sedan, this slicktop Mark II is a powerful asset sure to hold its value for years to come.
