It is forest dwelling kingfisher of medium size and bill is large- coral red. Upperpart is rufous orange with brilliant violet gloss and underpart is paler rufous. During flight striking bluish white rump is seen. In juvenile upperparts are browner and rump is bluer. Juvenile also has faint blackish barring on rufous underparts and blackish bill.
