Gallery Yamaki Fine Art is pleased to announce Asuka Nakayama’s solo exhibition. This will be Nakayama’s fourth show held at our gallery after four years. We will feature her latest large-scale works, showing her recent creative progress.
Nakayama has been depicting a space that combines a room with neatly arranged furniture and a garden with lush vegetation on a large pictorial plane. Her intention of expressing the idea that “the relationship between nature and humankind is a mixture of mutual coexistence and domination,” is directed toward the ambivalent thoughts that contemporary people have, who seek both nature and artifacts; It seems this viewpoint is ahead of the nature-oriented trend rapidly growing in the wake of the covid crisis. The scenes she describes look joyful and approachable at first sight, but the dynamism of the conflict between nature and human activity also gives the viewer a horrifying and eerie impression. While imagining a hopeful harmony between nature and humanity, Nakayama carefully captures the ironic realities on the surface. Her latest works, “opposite shore” and “It’s no use crying over spilt milk.” are ambitious paintings that reveal Nakano’s perspective, who continues to observe the space in front of her. Nakayama’s new thinking can be seen in the fatalistic titles as well.
Asuka Nakayama was born in 1986 in Hyogo, Japan. Since completing the master’s program at Kyoto City University of Arts, she has lived and worked in Hyogo. Nakayama had her first solo exhibition at Nishiwaki City Okanoyama Museum of Art in 2015 and exhibited her work at the VOCA Exhibition (The Ueno Royal Museum, 2019), known as a gateway to success for young painters. Also, she was awarded the Kyoto Newspaper Prize at the Kyoto Selected New Artists Exhibition. (The Museum of Kyoto, 2021) Nakayama is one of the artists who is expected to be active in the art world.
