So after digging around I think there might be a fix of updating to a later version of npm install -g npm@latest I think there are corrupt cache variants somewhere on the NPM side, and different versions of NPM add different headers and effectively cache bust that bad state. I might be totally wrong, but thats what i'm seeing. I can replicate the issue with |

If your node version is fixed can you try: npm install npm@latest
./node_modules/npm/bin/npm-cli.js install |

I do have the same problem and updating isn't preferable as we are using the nodejs package from ubuntu14.04 instead of nodejs-legacy. I hope the registry will be fixed soon. |
We too are using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with the packaged version of npm there. |
