Who is Charming Charlie and why is he coming to Colorado Springs?

Charming Charlie, a Houston-based women's clothing and accessories retailer that organizes merchandise according to color, will open its first Colorado Springs location in mid-April.

The store will be part of a series of new arrivals at the Promenade Shops at Briargate, the open-air, lifestyle center southeast of Voyager and Briargate parkways on the Springs' north side.

Charming Charlie will occupy a little more than one-third of a newly constructed 11,427-square-foot building, said Janyce Chmelka, a shopping center spokeswoman. Two more tenants are close to signing leases to join Charming Charlie in the building, she said.

Launched in 2004 and named for its founder and CEO, Charming Charlie has eight stores in the Denver area, Boulder and Fort Collins; the Springs location will be its first in southern Colorado. The chain has more than 350 stores in the United States, Canada, the Middle East and the Philippines.

Charming Charlie carries "a wide array of accessible fashion accessories merchandised by color," according to the chain. The Promenade Shops at Briargate store will offer a full range of products, "including fashion jewelry, handbags, small leather goods, scarves, watches, sunglasses, select footwear and apparel," the chain says.

The store's color-coordinated layout is designed to make it easy for customers to find what they need, Chmelka said.

"If you're going to accessorize that little black dress with red, you just go to the red section," she said.

Charming Charlie is the latest first-to-the-market store and restaurant at the Promenade Shops at Briargate, which opened in 2003 as an upper-end retail center with chic clothiers and destination retailers. An Apple store, Williams-Sonoma, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Ted's Montana Grill and P.F. Chang's are among stores and restaurants at the center.

In the last 18 months, Promenade Shops at Briargate has undergone its most extensive upgrade since its opening. The former Champps Americana restaurant was razed and two retail and restaurant buildings were constructed just east of the P.F. Chang's and Biaggi's restaurants.

"Having the refresh on the property with those two new buildings has created more attention and action," Chmelka said.
