George Lucas created history when he directed the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Depicting the story of a young Luke Skywalker setting off on a journey to overthrow a space empire, the cultural impact of Star Wars has been unparalleled.
Talking about the negative reviews that the franchise received, George Lucas talked about how Star Wars was abused by fans and studios alike. Stating the science fiction in the story and how everybody jumped on his project once he started earning well, Lucas was quite disappointed.
George Lucas Is Disappointed With Studios And Fans!
Back in 1977, no one would have expected the amount of fame that Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope would receive. Earning millions at the global box office, George Lucas became famous around the world as he busied himself with sequels (or in this case, prequels) about the space opera.
But the road wasn’t always smooth for the director. Talking about how many sacrifices had to be made for the real deal, Lucas revealed in an interview that he was quite disappointed with how studios and fans treated and abused his franchise during and after its release.
“What happens when there’s something new, people have a tendency to overdo it. They abuse it. Now, there were two things that got abused with Star Wars and still being abused. One, when Star Wars cam out everybody said ‘Oh, it’s a silly movie. It’s just a bunch of space battles and stuff. It’s not real'”
He further continued,
“I said ‘Well, there is stuff behind it. It’s not just a space battle. So they said ‘Fine’. So, the spaceships and that part of the science fantasy, got terribly abused and of course, everybody went out and made spaceship movies and they were all horrible.”
The director further made a highly controversial remark about how the studios were milking the franchise as they simply saw it from a monetary point of view and not from the quality of the content!

With a controversial remark against Hollywood, the director admitted that the studios can legally milk a franchise but that is what makes the movies dull and boring. Stating that a franchise is killed for money, George Lucas feels that studios have a license to kill these great franchises by abusing them beyond the limit.
“Other thing that got abused, naturally in a capitalist society, especially in an American point of view which is the studios and everything said ‘Wow, we can make a lot of money. This is the license to kill.”
Having no role in directing movies, Lucas enjoys his life wherein he gets credit every time a Star Wars character is used.
