Building Construction I

Project 1 : Experiencing Construction

From project brief : " The design process is ongoing from conceptual design right through to construction. The preparation of construction drawings plays an important role in this process."

In this project, we were required to visit an on-going project and identify different types of building elements as well as its construction process, details and materials. From our observation and study, we should compile our data into an A3 sized handbook with visuals, sketches and manual drawings inclusive of detailing and documentation of the building.

Project 2 : Construction detail and specification

From project brief : " This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of construction and application from prior projects.Emphasis in producing related manual construction drawingdetail and specification.Technical knowledge is viewed as something separate from design. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between these two areas of study. Critical success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of the design process. This assignment will enable you to develop and demonstrate some knowledge of construction, materials and structural theory in a small scale design project."

Task : Your task is to find and analyse the construction of a 2-storey or 3-storey residential building where you need to identify and propose only two (2) construction details for the selected elements of the building:

- Wall

- Door

- Window

- Slab

- Staircase

- Roof

Submission requirement :

- A2 presentation sheet in a clear cover containing the following:

1. Floor Plan

2. Section

3. Two (2) construction details of selected building elements. The drawings need to be scaled (1:50 or suitable scale) and manually illustrated.

- Building specifications

- Project 2 tutorial log sheet.

- Drawing and sketches are meant to provide visual documentation and communication. Hence they are required to be neat, clear and annotated.

- Assumptions can be made through reference from book/drawings (DO NOT PLAGIARIZE)

- Method of construction must be according to the local climatic condition.

I have chosen the Tetsuka House by John Pawson with construction details of its wall and staircase.
