XFL scores and recaps from Week 5

We’re halfway through the 2020 XFL season, and we saw some great games in Week 5. Here’s how the teams stacked up against the odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Houston Roughnecks top Seattle Dragons 32-23

The Roughnecks remain undefeated after Week 5 but faced more of an uphill battle than most expected Saturday. Houston entered as 12.5-point favorites but trailed until the fourth quarter. Seattle’s unexpected scoring helped the game hit its point total of 46.

Houston’s P.J. Walker continued to prove that he’s the best quarterback in the XFL by throwing for 315 yards and three scores with two interceptions. He connected with star wideout Cam Philips for 122 yards and two scores. Running back Nick Holley also notched four receptions for 72 yards and a score. James Butler had a strong showing as well and rushed for 52 yards and two scores on 12 carries.

Seattle started B.J. Daniels under center for the first time this year after and only got 114 passing yards from him in the loss. However, he did provide a spark with his legs by running for 30 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Trey Williams also tallied 28 yards on the ground with one score. No Dragon managed to get haul in a touchdown catch, but Austin Proehl led the team with four receptions for 56 yards.

The game ended with controversy after the referees botched the whistle and ended the game two seconds early.

New York Guardians trounce Dallas Renegades 30-12

New York entered Week 5 as 7.5-point underdogs but blew Dallas out of the water. The Guardians carried most of the scoring load as the game squeaked by the over/under of 37.5.

Luis Perez got a win in his first career XFL start and went 16-of-30 for 229 yards and a score with one interception. His best play of Week 5 was an 80-yard touchdown pass to Colby Pearson, who led all receivers with 95 receiving yards on five receptions.

Philip Nelson threw the ball a ton and was 28-of-49 for 210 yards with no scores and two interceptions while filling in for the injured Landry Jones. None of Dallas top weapons stood out in this one, as the Renegades only score came on a 92-yard kickoff return by Austin Walker.

DC Defenders knock off St. Louis BattleHawks 15-6

St. Louis was favored by 3.5 points but lost by nine points. This was expected to be a low scoring game, but the 21 points the BattleHawks and Defenders totaled fell well short of the over/under, which was set at 38.5.

Both sides had lackluster performances on offense in this contest. Jordan Ta’amu had a game-high 174 passing yards and completed 15 of his 25 throws with no scores or interceptions. His top wideout for the day was L’Damian Washington, who finished with five receptions for 114 yards. Matt Jones led St. Louis with 70 rushing yards. The BattleHawks weren’t able to score a single touchdown.

Tyree Jackson subbed in for Cardale Jones in the first quarter but had underwhelming numbers. He was 9-of-14 for 39 yards with one nine-yard touchdown pass to Khari Lee on his first drive. Jackson also rushed for 32 yards. Jhurell Pressley notched a game-high 107 rushing yards in the contest on 15 carries.

Los Angeles finish comeback vs. Tampa Bay Vipers 41-34

The Wildcats were 2-point favorites against the rapidly improving Vipers and covered the spread in a wild one. Both teams were prolific scorers and surpassed the point total of 40 with ease.

Josh Johnson is rising on the passing yards list and tallied 288 with four touchdowns and an interception against Tampa Bay. He delivered scoring strikes to four different players, including Tre McBride, who has totaled four scores in his last three appearances. Wideout Jordan Smallwood didn’t reach the end zone but led all Vipers in receiving yards with 85 on four receptions. DuJuan Harris notched the teams only rushing score and finished with seven yards on nine carries.

Tampa Bay’s Taylor Cornelius threw for 300 yards with two scores and two interceptions while running for a touchdown as well. He had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter, but the interception he threw in the final minute of the fourth quarter ruined that opportunity. Jalen Tolliver and Reece Horn each caught touchdown passes and tallied 95 and 90 receiving yards, respectively. Running back Jacques Patrick ran for 23 yards and a score before a back injury removed him from the game.
