i think E. polycephalus and Echinomastus johnsonii also grow around Helendale. Must be a real spinefest! I must visit....

According to Bensons book, Native Cacti of California, the dots on the maps do show similar locations (no mention of Helendale specifically) but I wouldn't be surprised if they were growing side by side. San Bernardino, Inyo and 1 or 2 locations in Kern County.
I too have been wanting to visit. Let's get a 2010 roadtrip going!!
