Distribution and Habitat

Atlantic Puffins occur on Atlantic coasts. They inhabit rocky islands and sea cliffs during the breeding season, and spend the rest of the year at sea.

Breeding

The Atlantic Puffin nests in colonies that are usually found on rocky cliffs. To attract a female, males flick their heads and grunt like a pig near an appropriate nest site.  Once paired, they maintain their bond by rubbing their bills together. Both the male and female usually dig a nesting burrow with their beaks and feet, however Atlantic Puffins sometimes place their nests in crevices or under rocks. The female lays one white egg that is incubated for 36-45 days. The pair mates for life and tend to use the same nest every breeding season. Atlantic Puffins do not breed until they are 3–6 years old.

Diet

Atlantic Puffins can catch quite a few fish during one dive, holding them crosswise in their bill. Backward-pointed spines on the roof of their mouth and tongue help keep the fish in place.
