This member of the Cucurbitaceae family was given this name by Otto
Wilhelm Sonder. It's from
South Africa up through eastern Africa pass the Arab peninsular pass
India to Indonesia. Give it a well-drained soil, some water and sun, and the
caudex will grow to 20 centimetres in diameter and the vines from three
to six meters. The flowers are yellow and it is a monoecious plant.
The genera is named after
Josef Zehner, an Austrian botanical illustrator. The species name
means 'rough'.
