This member of the Cactaceae family was given this name by Wolfgang Blum & Dieter Waldeis in 1999. It is found in north-eastern Mexico and Texas, growing in grit with little water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow up to ten or even fifteen centimetres in diameter, the branches up to 120 centimetres in height. The flowers are variations of pink.

The genera name means 'thorny Cereus'. The species name after Marcel Kroenlein, 1928-1994, director of Jardin Exotique in Monaco.
