Until April 2012 the staff of the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) at Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam, thought that breeding success for the endangered Keeled box turtle in 2011 had been unsuccessful.
However, on the 19th of April they were surprised to find two hatchlings of this species in one of the semi-wild adult enclosures at the centre. Hoang Van Thai, the manager of the TCC, said that Cuora mouhotii usually breeds and nests from May to August, it ismost likely this secretive species nested in the large 64m² enclosure last year without being detected and eggs had hatched insitu. The keepers will now be keeping their eyes peeled for more unexpected, but welcome, guests.
