Axel Hutte – Fecit

Axel Hutte’s photo book consists of many images taken in Australia, South America, and Europe. Most of these are cropped, frame-filling representations of natural phenomena within the landscape, and often do not show the horizon. This makes the viewer think more deeply about what the subject may be. If there were a horizon or a mark of land in the image, it would be a lot easier for us to say what the scene is.

His images of reflections were taken of no more than a few square metres of water, yet we see this mass of jumbled, abstract objects which can come across as enlighteneing, or slightly confusing to the eye.

My idea of reflections is a little similar to this as in I would like to show only the water in the image. However, I will only be taking my images at night, of the reflections within cities. For example, I would take a photograph of a lit-up sign on a building, or the light from a window – but only in reflections. This will cause the same kind of effect as Hutte’s work, in that it will be distorted and confusing for the viewer.
