Fish of the Trachipterus genus of the Trachipteridae (Ribbonfishes) family of the Taeniosomi suborder of the Lampriformes order of the Lampridiomorpha superorder.

Mediterranean dealfish (Trachipterus trachypterus) was first described in 1789 by the German doctor, botanist and chemist Johann Friedrich Gmelin (1748-1804).
It is a bathypelagic species. It inhabits the depths of 100-600 meters. The maximum recorded length is 300 cm. It feeds on squid and fish.

It is a rare inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
